Editing metadata in BitDek

BitDek lets you edit metadata right in the app: track titles, artists, albums, genres, credits, and more. Before you dive in, one thing is worth understanding.

In-app edits change how your music appears in BitDek. They don’t change your files. Edits are stored in BitDek’s library database, and the tags embedded in your audio files stay exactly as they were. That makes in-app editing fast and completely safe. It also means the durable, portable home for your metadata is still the tags themselves. Fix something in the tags with a proper tagging tool and the fix belongs to your files forever, in any player. Fix it in BitDek and the fix belongs to BitDek.

Our advice: use a tagger for corrections you want to keep for life, and use BitDek’s editors for quick fixes and the fields only BitDek displays. More on this in Understanding audio file metadata.

Editing a track

Tap a track’s … button and choose Track Info, then tap the pencil. The sheet becomes Edit Track.

What you can edit:

• Title and Sort Title
• Track Number and Disc Number
• Primary Artist and Track Artists
• Credits: Composers, Lyricists, Producers, and Mixers
• Genres. Separate multiple genres with commas or semicolons.
• Classical fields: Work, Movement Name, Movement #, and of Total

Artist fields suggest names already in your library as you type, so credits stay consistent.

Two details worth knowing. Album Artist isn’t editable here. It belongs to the album, so edit it at the album level and it applies everywhere at once. And if you leave Sort Title blank, it fills itself from the title.

Editing an album

Open an album and tap the ⋯ menu, then Edit Album… to jump straight into editing. (The album’s info button gets you there too, via the pencil.)

What you can edit:

• Title, Sort Title, and (for multi-version albums) Album Group Title
• Album Artist
• Genres
• Release Year and Original Release Year
• Primary Type (album, EP, single) and Edition (deluxe, remaster)
• Is Compilation
• Record Label, Catalog Numbers, Barcode, Language, and Country of Release

Album edits do the heavy lifting for you. Changing the Album Artist or Genres updates every track on the album in one pass, which is the fastest way to fix a whole album. Each track’s own Artist is left alone, so a guest vocalist keeps their credit.

Editing an artist

On an artist’s screen, tap the ⋯ menu, then Edit Artist….

What you can edit:

• Name and Sort Name
• Artist Type: Person, Group, Orchestra, Choir, Character, or Other

Sort Name auto-fills from the name if you leave it blank. Set it manually when you want “Rolling Stones, The” filing under R.

Where edits live

Everything above saves to BitDek’s library on your device. The upside is real: your original files are never touched, so there’s zero risk to your collection. The tradeoff is just as real: these edits won’t travel with your files to another app or another computer.

So think of it as two layers. Your files’ embedded tags are the permanent record. BitDek’s edits are how your library presents itself here. Keep the permanent record clean with a dedicated tagging tool, and enjoy the quick fixes in between.
